EasyJet flights to Paphos will commence on March 30th 2008.

This recent announcement by the budget airline in the wake of its ‘GB Airways’ takeover is set to provide a huge boost to the Cypriot tourist industry from the end of March 2008 onwards.

Taking over existing routes...

Although the budget carrier, owned by Cypriot-born entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou had long ago expressed an interest in starting a regular service between the UK and the Republic of Cyprus, repeated attempts at the negotiation of landing rights broke down amongst an ever increasing number of obstacles which many in the travel industry felt to be a thinly disguised attempt to protect the financial interests of Cyprus Airways, the Republic’s national airline.

Whilst the GB Airways takeover does of course open a number of other established routes for EasyJet, it also provides an open door for the commencement of budget flights to Cyprus, as Paphos is already an established GB Airways destination. What is more, the takeover creates a base for EasyJet at Manchester airport; good news indeed for travellers between the British Midlands and Cyprus.

And so, March 30th 2008 sees the start of a daily service between London Gatwick and Paphos, and a 5-days-a-week service between Manchester and Paphos.

For property owners in Cyprus, this does of course spell good news on a couple of fronts.

Firstly, there is the fact that a visit to their holiday home is set to become substantially more affordable all round, as large scheduled carriers such as British Airways and Cyprus Airways are widely tipped to adjust their fares somewhat in the wake of EasyJet’s arrival in the Republic.

Secondly, EasyJet’s services to the Republic of Cyprus set the stage for a substantial boost to the island’s’ tourist industry. The Republic already boasts first rate holiday facilities, sandy beaches, ‘guaranteed weather’ for most of the year and a host of activities ranging from water sports and leisure facilities to ancient monuments and outdoor pursuits. In fact, as holiday destinations go, the Republic of Cyprus is widely considered to be one of the most perfect destinations in the entire Mediterranean.

Thus far, the only thing missing from this equation has been a budget carrier providing low-cost travel to the Republic, and the commencement of EasyJet services from Gatwick and Manchester on March 30th more than adequately addresses this issue.

As a direct consequence, those homeowners in Cyprus looking to derive a rental income from their properties will find their home’s rental potential to be greatly increased due to a substantial influx of extra visitors to the island each year. In turn, this will of course have an extremely positive effect on capital growth potential too.

With an established budget airline now flying to Paphos and rumours also abounding about a regular Ryanair service between the UK and Larnaca in the near future, holiday homes in the Republic of Cyprus now boast a greater investment and rental income potential than ever before.
