Many people feel that the Mazotos marina is not what estate agents claimed it would be
But while the average estate agent five years ago was conjuring up visions of highly exclusive yachting marinas in his or her clients' eyes, the finished article has turned out to be a far cry from the many fine promises made in those days. The 'marina' is actually a rather utilitarian little harbour, barely a hundred yards across, and designed to provide moorage for a portion of the south coast's fishing fleet. What's more, it's also a three mile drive from the centre of Mazotos; hardly on its door-step.

Talking to some resident British expatriates, one certainly gets the impression that many feel the village to have been misrepresented at the time they decided to buy a home there. To be sure, Mazotos is a picturesque enough little community, but it is miles from anywhere, and its infrastructure has not grown along with its size.
While other villages, such as Oroklini for instance, have seen the arrival of new supermarkets, shops, and a host of other facilities following the arrival of a few thousand British expats, Mazotos has remained relatively unchanged. As a result, the village's handful of small shops, and one or two tavernas, are now woefully inadequate in view of the massive increase in population seen here in recent years. |
Mazotos village does, however, boast one single real estate gem, an amazing seven bedroom villa set on its own 17 acre hill on the village's eastern fringes. To put the village as a whole into context, if one wants to buy a week's shopping, one either needs to take twenty-five minute drive into Larnaca, or a fifteen minute drive along small country roads to the Plus store in Alethriko.
Then of course there's Mazotos beach, which is about a mile and a half from the village proper. A narrow stretch of shingle and sand, barely a hundred and fifty metres long, it is not one of the better beaches in the area. The nearest proper beach is a small strip of sand adjacent to the 'marina', where a local entrepreneur has erected a makeshift beach kiosk, complete with parasols and sun-loungers, called the 'Alaminos Secret Paradise'. |

It has to be said that unless living miles from anywhere, with no amenities to speak of and only a bunch of other expatriates and a few camels for company, is your idea of rural bliss, Mazotos is unlikely to be your cup of tea.
