With just over two miles of sandy beaches, a large number of hotels (ranging from 3 to 5 star), several apartment hotels and countless holiday villas and apartments, the Dekhelia Road tourist zone on Oroklini's seafront has developed into a much-visited holiday destination over the years.
At its eastern end, more or less across from the turn-off to Pyla, one finds the Cyprus Tourist Organization (CTO) Beach, which is easily one of the most popular beaches in Cyprus during the height of summer. With an attached restaurant, kiosk, showers, and a selection of other facilities, this is a perfect, if somewhat busy, place to hit the beach. |

Heading west along the Dekhelia Road Tourist Zone

About half a mile west of the CTO beach, past the innumerable holiday apartment and beachfront villas, one reaches the Golden Bay, the Sandy Beach, and the Lordos, a trio of 4 and 5-star beachfront hotels, complete with attached leisure complexes, water sports centres, and a stretch of fabulous beach.
Owned and operated by a single company, these three hotels form the largest accommodation/conference centre in the Republic of Cypus.
Across the road from this massive complex, a gaggle of bars and restaurants stand by to service guests who venture away from the hotels for a change of scenery. |
Leaving this cluster of hotels behind and driving towards Larnaca, one begins to get into the Dekhelia Road tourist zone's heart.
With a number of diving centres, quad-bike* safari operators, a further water sports centre, 24-hour supermarkets, countless sports bars and every conceivable restaurant from Persian cuisine to Pizza Hut, this part of the Oroklini seafront offers its visitors a wide choice of activities, as well as eateries and pubs.
It must be said though, the the Dekhelia Road is beginning to look a little on the tired side, and is consequently in need of an overall facelift. A complete redevelopment of the strip was planned as part as an extension of Larnaca's new marina. |

However, with the plans for the marina's construction currently on hold, the redevelopment of Dekhelia Road, and its tourist amenities, has also been put on ice. We will keep you posted as and when new developments emerge.

Once past the Oroklini/Pyla turnoff, one finds the Palm Beach and the Princess Beach, a further pair of 4-star hotels near the western end of the leisure zone. In addition to these two large beachfront complexes, this part of the Oroklini seafront also boasts a wide selection of 3-star hotels and hotel apartment complexes.
The landward side along this stretch of Dekhelia Road is devoted mainly to pubs and sports bars, with the occasional 24-hour supermarket and restaurant dotted between. From here, a number of side roads also lead to a myriad of holiday apartments and villa complexes, all within a couple of miles walk of the beach. |
A couple of hundred yards west of the Princess Beach hotel the beach grows narrow and eventually turns to shingle. As the beach fizzles out, so do the amenities of Dekhelia Road, with the Mer Bleu Restaurant, which is incidentally to be highly recommended for both atmosphere and the quality of its seafood, and the Oroklini Tourist Kiosk providing the last amenities along this stretch.
From here, Dekhelia Road begins to turn into more of a residential zone, before finally running into the light industrial zone surrounding the old oil refinery at the edge of Larnaca. |

If you're visiting Oroklini, then you'll find a wide range of diversions in the tourist zone along its seafront. And if you're into leisurely walks by the beach, you might want to park your car at the Mer Bleu and start strolling towards Dekhelia (with the sea on your right). Here you'll find a series of sitting areas, beach bars, restaurants, and an assortment of other things not visible from the road itself.

Moving to Cyprus
During the past decade or thereabouts, the villages of Oroklini and Pyla have been the destinations for a great many British expatriates moving to Cyprus.
