Elea is far ahead of its competitors

Although the planned expansion works at the Secret Valley golf course are not yet underway, and Cyprus' other new venues are still barely a twinkle in their developers' eyes, Agia Marinouda's golf course is nearing completion.

Running at about 6,900 yards, and playing to a par 71, Elea is, in Nick Faldo's own words, "thoughtful rather than big hitting", and takes maximum advantage of the magnificent local rock formations found in this part of the island. The course itself, and the surrounding Elea Golf Resort with its luxury residential development, are located in the gently sloping coastal hills, scarcely a couple of miles from the sands of Geroskipou's Riccos beach.

Blending perfectly into its surroundings

The weather in Cyprus is hot and sunny for most of the year, and as a result, water is quite a precious commodity in the Republic. Together, Faldo Design and its contractors Southern Golf have created a course which perfectly blends superb aesthetics with the island's ever present need to conserve water.

At Agia Marinouda you'll find a golf course where lush fairways smoothly blend into, as Southern Golf put it, "desert-style rough areas, striking limestone formations, and mature carob groves". While announcements have been made that Tony Jacklin will be overseeing the remodelling of Secret Valley's course, whereas Jack Nicklaus will create Limni near Polis, the Elea Golf Course by Nick Faldo will be the first signature venue to actually be finished in Cyprus.

And, just to put things into context, it's generally agreed that Aphrodite Hills is the jewel in the crown of Cyprus' golf courses. But even disregarding Nick Faldo's superior course design for a moment, Agia Marinouda's 2,260m² clubouse makes Aphrodite Hills' clubouse look positively tiny.
