Information about Cyprus

In 2006, the Republic's government announced a major new initiative to improve the leisure infrastructure of Cyprus. Golf courses and resorts would be built across the island in an effort to attract golfers.

Now, almost four years later, the first of the fourteen new golf courses has seen its grand opening, while a few of the others have moved beyond the planning stages.

Limni Golf Resort

Twin Signature Courses near Polis
(Earthworks now in progress)

As the only twin-signature (Jack Nicklaus & Gary Player) venue currently planned in Cyprus, the scenically spectacular Limni Golf Resort is beginning to attract an unprecedented amount of attention from the golfing world.

With two Links, one at the beachfront, the other in a spectacular hillside location, this resort is of a scope and ambition previously unheard of on Aphrodite's Isle. Scheduled for completion at the end of 2012, Limni is now seen by many to have stolen Secret Valley's crown as the flagship of Cyprus' golf courses.

Elea Golf Resort

Agia Marinouda's Golf Course
(Grand Opening on October 17th 2010)

Created by Faldo Design, the Elea Golf Resort is the first of Cyprus' new golf courses to reach completion. Situated in the coastal hills just a couple of miles outside Paphos, Elea Golf Resort boasts, in Nick Faldo’s own words “thoughtful, rather than big-hitting golf”, by taking full advantage of the many dramatic rock formations and Carob tree goves which are part of the local landscape.

The resort will feature a driving range, practice greens, pro-shop and a state-of-the-art clubhouse, and will also include a luxurious fitness centre and health spa, a five-star hotel with adjacent retail village. What’s more, while many of Cyprus’ golf courses are still in the proposal stages, Agia Marinouda has been under construction since 2007, and is scheduled to be officially opened by Sir Nick Faldo on October 17th 2010.

Secret Valley Golf Club

The Secret Valley Golf Course and Country Club is still viewed by some as the crowning glory when it comes to golf on the island. It is located 18km east of Pafos, near Petra tou Romiou, the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, patron goddess of Cyprus. Golf courses boasting settings as scenically beautiful as this are indeed rare, since Secret Valley is set in a picturesque ravine among landscaped gardens and breathtaking natural rock formations.

The current course plays to a par 72 and measures 6,120 metres, though this is due to be remodelled by golfing legend Tony Jacklin in the foreseeable future. The clubhouse, recently redesigned in a comfortable country style, features a large veranda overlooking the putting greens. Amenities include a bar, restaurant, shop with golf accessories, and a golf academy with driving range, putting greens and video coaching to improve technique.

There's more to Cyprus than just golf courses

Whilst a great many resources are currently committed to the planning and construction of the next generation of Cyprus' golf courses and resorts, let's not forget that the Republic has so much more on offer for visitors and prospective property buyers alike.

A new marina is being constructed at Limassol, there are plans afoot for a new couple of new theme parks, and the Famagusta peninsula and Cape Greco are also seeing large-scale expansions.
