Information about Cyprus

What happens when you let a legendary golfer and golf course designer like Gary Player loose on a disused opencast coppermine in a scenically spectacular location on the north west coast of Cyprus?

The spectacular answer to this question can be found in the Troodos foothills above Chrysochous Bay, about twenty three miles north of Paphos.

A Vision of Golfing Glory

Originally a mine which dates back to Roman times, the terrain at the Limni Golf Resort is varied to say the least.

While the coastal plain with its gently rolling slopes lends itself quite naturally to Jack Nicklaus' sprawling design for the Limni Beach Golf Course, the upper half of the resort consists of a massive disused opencast mine plateau with a huge flooded crater at its centre.

Boasting unrivalled views not only of the Mediterranean Sea, and the distant Akamas Peninsula, but also the Limni Beach Resort below, the old mine presented a supreme challenge for all but the most accomplished golf course designer.

What was needed was a golfing legend with the vision to turn the dramatic landscape into a glorious piece of golfing architecture which brooks no rival, either in Cyprus, oe anywhere in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The challenge was accepted by South-African golfing legend and acclaimed veteran course designer, Gary Player.

Drawing up a masterplan* which incorporated the mine's crater into his design (the back nine are inside the crater), and commissioning a colossal program of earthworks to sculpt its plateau according to his vision, Player set about creating what is effectively one of the few mountain-top Links in the World.

Earthworks on a Monumental Scale

Due for completion at the end of 2010, the scale of the earthworks being undertaken in this half of the Limni Golf Resort are truly massive.

The photos on this page show the plateau on which Limni Golf Resort's Gary Player signature course will be built. To provide an idea of the scale, the raised area in the image to the left is the crater's rim, which is being backfilled and shaped according to the masterplan's specifications.

From one end to the other, the plateau on which the course and the associated club facilities will be sites is well over a mile in length. The crater in which the back nine are situated alone is almost three quarters of a mile at its longest point.

Limni's 'Mountain' Golf Resort is a piece of design genius, unrivalled anywhere in the region.

Indeed, many golf course operators around the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are casting an envious eye at Limni's Gary Player signature course in the sure knowledge that their own facilities are no match for this superlative-defying piece of golfing architecture, once it is completed in 2012.

And, like Limni's other half on the coastal plains below, this is a fully functional golf resort, including its own clubhouse, pratice greens, driving range, golf academy with resident PGA Pro and a Pro-Shop. It will also include a range of facilities geared towards outdoor sports such as hiking, mountain biking, and even its own stables. A small museum chronicling the Limni mine's 2,000 year history, as well as the history of the immediate region, will also be constructed here.

Once again, the resort will incorporate an extensive development of highly exclusive golf villas, numbering between three hundred and fifty and five hundred. These homes are anticipated to be released for sale during the latter stages of 2011, and are widely regarded as some of the most desirable golf properties to be found anywhere in this part of the world.

Kinousa Village

Sitting at an altitude of around 450 metres above sea level, the tiny village of Kinousa currently consists of a picturesque little church, and barely fifty houses. There are, however, great things in store for this tiny community, as it is only a question of time before the eyes of homebuyers and property investors fall upon it due to its proximity to the new Limni Golf Resort.
