The church of Ayios Lazaros in the centre of the town is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture on Cyprus. The final resting place of St. Lazarus being here distinguishes this church. The inscription: 'The friend of Christ' was engraved on his sarcophagus.

Throughout history, the export of salt has brought much prosperity to Larnaca. Many foreign merchants and consuls settled in the town, which gradually became a trade centre due to the exporting of salt bringing in significant revenue.
The name Larnaca derives from the discovery in the area of a large number of sarcophagi (larnakes) and was probably first used in the early years of the Turkish domination in 1571.

The Fort of Larnaca, located on the seafront, now houses the local Medieval Museum. It was originally built in the Middle Ages and was used by the British during their occupation as a prison.

Larnaca is well known for the rows of palm trees along the picturesque sea-front. During the major festivals, much of the activity is centred around this city promenade with the Festival of the Flood ( Kataklysmos ) celebrated in early summer with a series of cultural events being the most important of these for the city of Larnaka.

To the east, the town incorporates a tourist zone with many modern apartments and hotels. Larnaca is also the home of a marina with a capacity of 200 yachts, a modern harbour and of course Larnaca international airport.

Golf in Cyprus

Although the Larnaca region cannot currently boast its own golf course, a firm committment by the Cypriot government and the C.T.O. to boost the overall profile of golf in Cyprus, through extra publicity and the construction of a further fourteen courses in addition to the four aleady existing ones, means that one of the fourteen new course licences has been allocated to the Larnaca region, thus providing a huge boost to the local infrastructure.
