Information about Cyprus

Boasting glorious sea views, Kouklia village is located on a coastal hill, about a ten minute drive south of Paphos town. While best described as a sleepy little community, it has nevertheless continued to hold a special appeal for a small number of British expatriates who came to Aphrodite’s Isle not only seeking the real Cyprus, but who also have a taste for the island’s history and the occasional game of golf.

Not only is Kouklia home to two of the island’s most important archaeological sites, the ancient Sanctuary of Aphrodite and a fortified 13th Century Lusignan manor house, the little village also boasts an extremely close proximity to the Secret Valley Golf Course, as well as Aphrodite Hills Golf Club.

But despite its fabulous location, Kouklia has very much retained its traditional character

St Luke's Church in Kouklia

Indeed, visitors to Kouklia will notice little in the way of holiday villas or large-scale apartment complexes. Nor will they find any tourist-orientated souvenir shops selling cheap Chinese-made ornaments to the many tourists visiting Aphrodite’s Sanctuary each year. Instead they are confronted by a small maze of narrow, well kept streets lined by charming stone-built houses, after they’ve taken the drive up the palm tree lined main road into the village centre and to the archaeological monuments.

Where amenities are concerned, Kouklia features a few small stores and kiosks, as well as a handful of coffee shops and village-style tavernas offering traditional Cypriot meals and snacks.

The village is surrounded by fertile lands abounding with grapevines (wine-making and table grape varieties), all manner of citrus fruits, kiwis, avocados, bananas, apricots, olives, locust beans, legumes, peanuts, and a very large variety of assorted vegetables. There are also a large number of cattle farms to be found between Kouklia and the Asprokremnos dam to the North West.

Incidentally, on other property websites you may have come across references to the forests of Oriti and Randi which are supposedly located close to Kouklia. These are in fact inaccurate, as the locality is taken up primarily by fields and golf courses.

All in all, Kouklia is a charming little traditional community which, much like Maroni in the south of the island, holds a great appeal to a certain kind of homebuyer who is looking for a taste of the real Cyprus and a relaxing game of golf.

The Secret Valley Golf Course

Less than three miles south of Kouklia you’ll find the Ha Potami (Low River) valley, which is discreetly tucked between the coastal hills. This scenic little ravine is home to the Secret Valley Golf Course and Country Club. Opened in 1996, this is the second grass course in Cyprus, which has become a firm favourite with the local golfing crowd during the intervening years.

Recently too, Secret Valley has attracted a great deal of attention, since it was earmarked for what is surely one of the most ambitious and stunning projects of its kind anywhere in the Mediterranean. Spearheaded by golfing legend Tony Jacklin, the Secret Valley Golf and Country Club is undergoing a transformation from mere course one of Europe’s most exclusive golf resorts during the coming decade.

Expansions to the resort will include the construction of two golf courses, a nine-hole pitch and putt, golf academy, tennis courts, football academy, five star hotel, retail village, health spa, 850 metres of beachfront with manmade beaches, adjacent leisure centre and much more besides.

Aptly named ‘Venus Rock’ by its developers, the resort is also set to feature a new marina, a five star hotel, cinema complex, numerous restaurants, and around three thousand of the most exclusive golf villas to be found anywhere in the Mediterranean region.

Aphrodite Sun Properties features a large selection of luxurious villas located on this fabulous resort, and in its immediate vicinity. Please contact us for more information about Secret Valley, and the Venus Rock Golf and Leisure Resort.

  • The village's modern name of Kou(vou)klia was shortened from the name of Kouvikoularios meaning ‘the property of a Byzantine officer’.
  • Kouklia village square is located less than two and a half miles from the Secret Valley Clubhouse.
  • The local population is considered to be particularly pious and religious by other Cypriots

Cyprus' New Golf Courses?

If you search Google for Cyprus' new golf courses, the results abound with overseas property websites promising fourteen new golf facilities and resorts across the island, and painting a picture of Cyprus as the next Mediterranean golfing paradise.

The reality of this matter, however, is dramatically different from that depicted in the masses of sales spiel littering the search results, and it now looks as though of the fourteen planned golfing venues, only four are likely to ever be finished.
